Local Color: Things, Persons, Places, Experiences

by Charlene Babb Knadle

These fifty-two poems are inspired by a particular environment, Long Island, NY but are nevertheless universal, by suggestion. As Maxwell Wheat, first Nassau County (LI) Poet Laureate, says of them, "This is a people's collection of poetry...a collection of well-thought and well-crafted poems that I would like to use as models."

Echoes

If you think you find yourself
in these poems, you're right.
I noticed you there as I wrote.
When you took my place,
owning my "I," eclipsing me,
I thought, That's okay—
that's when I'm most fully here,
when you've made me invisible.
